In the swirl of wedding planning, you’re making decision after decision, and now your makeup trial is approaching. You might find yourself picking out photos of beautiful people, not really sure what to ask for.
As a professional wedding makeup artist, there are a few key terms and looks you should know before your trial. Plus, I’ve added a few important questions to ask your artist to ensure you get the perfect bridal look.
3 Most Common Makeup Styles for Your Wedding Day:
Soft Glam
What is soft glam? I define soft glam as makeup that looks semi-natural, with no harsh lines and natural tones, but you can still tell you’re wearing makeup. Soft glam is the most popular choice among brides. It’s bright, glowy, and the blurred-out techniques make it perfect for a wedding day look.
Full Glam
Full glam is exactly what it sounds like—makeup with all the works, a full beat, if you will. This includes thick lashes, darker eyes, full skin coverage, and beautifully sculpted features. Typically, this look is more matte and can be achieved with darker or more natural tones.
Natural Glam
Natural is definitely relative—a lot of looks you see online may fall into the soft glam category, but natural is exactly what it sounds like: the barely-there bride. This look is for someone seeking undetectable makeup. Think Sofia Richie. It involves very few skin products, a skin-like finish, eyes with typically one tone, minimal or no fake lashes, and very soft browns.

A Few Things to Consider (and to ask your artist) Before Your Trial:
What is my skin type, and do I sweat?(Is your skin dry, oily, or combination? Do you sweat a lot on your face, and in any specific areas?)
What is my everyday skincare routine?
What am I comfortable with in my everyday makeup?
What kind of skin finish do I want?(Glowy and skin-like, matte, or something in between?)
What types of lipstick am I comfortable with?
What are a few things I absolutely do not like?
How should I be treating and prepping my skin before the wedding?
What’s the vibe of my wedding, and what style do I want for my hair?
As you prepare for your makeup trial, keeping these questions in mind will help ensure you get the look you’ve always dreamed of. Communication with your artist is key, so don’t be afraid to share your thoughts and preferences. After all, this is your special day, and you deserve to feel your most beautiful self!
